Stan Van Gundy's Detroit Departure & Possible Head Coaches

The Detroit Pistons have been in some type of a grunt the last few years and it was recently reported that the Pistons and Van Gundy decided to part ways only after 4 incredible years. Van Gundy served as  Head Coach and the President of Basketball Operations. Within his 4 year stint with Detroit, Stan made progressions such as drafting notable players like Stanley Johnson and the 1st round pick in the 2017 NBA Draft Luke Kennard. He also made some trades happen as well, as the organization negotiated a sign and trade deal to send Brandon Knight to Milwaukee and bring Brandon Jennings to Detroit. This season's trade deadline was huge because the Pistons shockingly made the biggest trade deal with the Los Angeles Clippers to acquire Blake Griffin, also in 2016 they clinched a playoff birth since '09. So, Stan definitely made progression in his time with Detroit and trying to plant a seed in the motor city so that the pistons can be one of the top elite teams in the NBA. With that, the Pistons slowly improved every season that Stan was there.

To start Van Gundy's stint, the Pistons were 32-50 and finished 12th overall in the 2014-15 season, but that was just the start. In 2015-16, they were 44-38 and finished 8th overall and earned a playoff spot that season. This year in 2017-18, Detroit stood at 39-43 and finished 9th overall. Overall, Stan did a fantastic job in Detroit and really set a foundation for the franchise under his guidance and leadership, and as a Piston fan myself I think that Stan should definitely have the opportunity to coach again. Now, let's talk about the coaching vacancy.

The head coach position is now open and with Van Gundy gone, there are some good coaches around the league who could make some possible candidates that could fill that Detroit Head Coach position. Starting with Jerry Stackhouse, Stackhouse currently serves as head coach of the Raptors 905 of the NBA G-League. They had a decent season in the 2016-17 as they won the G-League Championship and with an incredible coaching performance Stack won the Coach of the Year that season. Stackhouse is also a former Piston as well so he would definitely be in the conversation for the Piston Head Coach position.

Next, we have Becky Hammon, Becky currently serves as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs. Also, Becky is the first female assistant coach in the NBA. Hammon played in the WNBA for the San Antonio Stars for 7 years, with that she knows how San Antonio system works. Becky would be another good candidate for the Pistons H.C. position because it would be a good opportunity for her to become the first female head coach in the NBA.

Last but not least we have Dwane Casey, Dwane served as the Toronto Raptors Head Coach for 7 years. He also led the Raptors to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016. Dwane developed one of the most efficient backcourt duos in the game today, which consists of Point Guard Kyle Lowry and Shooting Guard Demar DeRozan. Toronto's record was 53-23 which they finished 1st in the Eastern Conference this year. Now, with that unbelievable coaching performance, Casey is expected to be named 2017-2018 NBA Coach of the Year.

All of these coaches are possible candidates are amazing coaches but the ball is in the Pistons court. Whoever they decide to go with, they have to be sure that the person they choose has to be the right one to help this franchise grow and be one of the best franchises out there,  and as a Piston fan I want to see the right leader help this franchise excel to the next level and also to be one of the elite teams in the league.
